Frequently asked questionsCloth Menstrual Pads
How do I tell what absorbency my pad is ?
Our pads are colour coded with 1 contrasting snap grommet so you know what absorbency your pad is.
Panty liners are indicated by the pink snap grommet.
Light flow pads are indicated by the green snap grommet.
Moderate flow pads are indicated by the orange snap grommet only Green cycle pads.
Heavy flow pads are indicated by the red snap grommet.
Overnight pads are indicated by the purple snap grommet.
Is using reusable cloth pads gross ?
What's the difference between a pad with fleece backing and a pad with PUL?
Pads that are only fleece backed are not as waterproof as those with PUL . However they are not as environmentally friendly as pads that are only fleece backed.
It’s true that PUL fabric is non-biodegradable,however it is still a better choice for the environment than disposable pads. If you have a particularly heavy flow or bleed straight through pads then you may need to have PUL in your pads. PUL can make the pads less breathable. Pads that are only fleece backed are very breathable and biodegradable. At” green cycle pads” we use a very dense fleece which offers a great amount of protection against leaks.
What is PUL?
PUL is otherwise known as polyurethane laminate fabric. It is used to make the pads waterproof.
Do they smell?
No, cloth pads do not smell! Ironically it’s the chemicals in disposable pads that cause the odour.
How do I wear a cloth pad?
Cloth pads are worn just like disposable pads with wings. Instead of sticky strips, cloth pad wings have snaps that fasten around the bace of your underwear. Just remember to always place your pad so that you can see the pretty stitching around the Green cycle pads, or the zigzag stitch around the Butterfly cloth pads and the fleece or cotton side down.
How often do I need to change my cloth pad?
This largely depends on how heavy your flow is. A cloth pad will last roughly the same amount of time as a disposable pad. Keep an eye on your flow and see what works for you.
Are they difficult to wash?
No, they aren’t. They require no special treatment, just dump them in the washing machine with all your regular laundry however you will have to avoid using fabric softener as it will damage your cloth pads.
Are they hygienic?
Yes, cloth pads are hygienic. They can be sterilised unlike the disposables which come with a layer of bacteria on them! Which is why you can take a brand-new tampon out of its packaging and have mould growing on it.
How to use cloth pads on the go?
At school or work it’s not as difficult as you think! All you need is a small wet bag or pad wrapper. When you need to change your pad, hold your pad with the absorbent side face up, simply fold in the top and bottom and snap the wings together. This is also a perfect way to carry your clean pads and many women keep a spare cloth pad in their hand bag for just in case. When you get home rinse the pads and launder as usual. You can also wear a higher absorbency pad so you don’t have to change as often.
How to store my cloth pads?
Some women like to keep their stash in their underwear drawer or in the bathroom. It’s totally up to you!
How to store/carry dirty pads?
The best way to store/carry soiled pads is in a wet bag. Do not put them in an airtight container, it can cause bacteria to grow! You can also keep them in a bucket or laundry bag.
What style should I choose?
At Eco dreams we offer 3 different styles of cloth pads to choose from. There isn’t one that is better then the other, it’s all about your personal preference we recommend that you try one of each style to see which one you prefer.
What size should I choose?
Try measuring the length of the disposable pad that you are currently using. Now use this measurement as a guide when choosing what pad length you would prefer.
